Surf City - Lakeside
Words by Mike from Surf Ontario
Picture this. The biggest winter storm yet. Howling winds and blowing snow. Most of you would rather stay inside by the fire with a warm mug of tea. That is, unless you are crazy like some surfers I know. Surfers, yes you heard me right. Here in Ontario, these “surfers” wait for the waves our Ontario winter storms bring, and they cross their fingers the lakes won’t be frozen yet. Luckily today’s wetsuits and booties are built to withstand the cold temperatures though many a time, their faces are framed in icicles after a session on the lakes. Some even wear their wetsuits home, sealing in the heat before hopping in to a hot shower. If you are brave enough to be a bystander or photographer, you can watch these insane surfers brave the cold and snow as they paddle out, pop-up and glide through 4-6 ft waves for a stoke incomparable.
